There is no doubt the recent war wasn't about Land for Aliyev.
Here are my arguments:
Karabakh conflict didn't start during Heydar Aliyev's presidency but before him, in 1988 with Sumgait(1988) and Baku (1990) pogroms that were conducted against Armenians.

Azerbaijan presidents from 1988 to present.2003-present Ilham Aliyev(Heydar Aliyev's son).It was during Heydar Aliyev's presidency that Azerbaijan lost the war( Artsakh war started February 20th in 1988 ended may 12th in 1994 with a ceasefire agreement)Keep all this in mind
First, this must have been personal for Ilham Aliyev, Heydar Aliyev's son. Ilham had complex that richer and much bigger Azerbaijan lost the war to Artsakh which was much smaller in area size as well as in population size. Additionally, it happened during his dad's presidency.
People in Azerbaijan know much more about these issues, hence the dissatisfaction level was growing every day in the country.
Mass gathering in July, the crowd is screaming, we want war, we want Karabakh.
Considering all the factors mentioned above i came to a simple conclusion: he needed this war just to stay in power more and to wash his father's name. Everything as for him is as simple that.
