Today the Domestic Abuse Bill goes into the House of Lords for general debate. It's long awaited; the Bill has been three years in the making, delayed by both Covid and Brexit. The Bill does provide more support for survivors of domestic abuse and there's much to give thanks for.
We're thankful for better protection for women in courts, for a strengthened definition of domestic abuse and for the creation of the new role of Domestic Abuse Commissioner to provide public leadership on domestic abuse issues.
But there's more that could be done. We've been particularly focussing on protection for migrant women and the role that faith groups play in supporting survivors of domestic abuse. Provisions would be strengthened by local authorities being given more responsibility.
Please join us today as we pray for the conversations and debate being had over the course of the day, that things would shift where necessary and God's will will be done in the House of Lords as in heaven.
We pray that, whatever the outcome of today's debates, that the safety of women would be prioritised, the welfare of families at the forefront, and for the voices of the most marginalised to be heard. Lord God, would you come and have your way we pray.
