(1/7) In all seriousness, this sounds super on-brand with my particular Wednesday-Addams-aesthetic, but I mean it. We've become too divorced from a world without modern medicine. The fact that we live in a world where someone would destroy 500 doses of a life-saving vaccine https://twitter.com/effortlesslycat/status/1346333397879320577
(2/7) is completely mindboggling to me. I know I'm provoking people here, but honestly, if you're anti vax I hope it does because then at least you'll read what I have to say.

Someone said to me online today “Many unvaccinated people do not die”

But what about those who do?
(3/7) I’m not a medical professional. But I am a genealogist and historian. I spend most of my days knee-deep in vital records.

Have you ever seen a disease we can now prevent with vaccinations take out 5% or more of a town?
(4/7) Are you familiar with times and places in which 33% of children died before the age of five?

Have you seen women, when asked by the census enumerator how many children they have and how many they have living, provide, page after page, losses of four, five, seven children?
(5/7) I think the record I’ve seen was thirteen. Thirteen dead children.

Can you even imagine?

I've spent days on my belly in a cemetery trying to get the shadows right to photograph the inscription on one of hundreds of weather-worn baby graves.
(6/7) How about the adults? The parents who died leaving orphans? Wives leaving widowers who end up having to deposit their children on family members; husbands leaving widows who cannot provide for their children.

That's the world without vaccines.
(7/7) Vaccines are a freaking miracle. The fact that people don’t see that shows exactly how much vaccines have protected them because they have never seen the horrors firsthand that I witness on paper every single day.

Get your shots.
