A thread on #MumbaiOnACycle There are two things I absolutely love. History & cycling. So for the last few months, I’ve been exploring the history of Mumbai on my cycle. Here’s what I’ve seen. We’ll start with my fav area, Grant Road, and this stunning building from 1900.
The Hirachand Gumanji Boarding School still functions as a boarding school for Jain students. Built by the Javeri family, who’ve established similar charitable educational institutional & hostels all over the country. I read that this architectural style is traditional Indian
with Neo Classical elements. Look at the carvings on the gate. Monkeys, mongoose like creatures and other animals & birds entwined with foliage. I also read that the brothers Panachand & Manekchand Hirachand were pearl & diamond testers who worked their way up & created a legacy.
Check Contemporary Jain Legends for details on them. And if you live in #Mumbai , make sure you look up this beauty. @HelloMTDC @maha_tourism @incredibleindia @MinOfCultureGoI @UNESCO @AUThackeray @pedalandtring
