The first full day of data since the holidays.

Lots of interesting trends and new data.

A special thanks to all of the reporters out there like @LizaYuzda who dig out the data that is available and make it easy to find!

Onward!

Let's start with the national scene since we passed 600,000 cases as a nation this weekend.

The curve is plenty steep. The hint of bending in December is gone or at least hidden.

The mishmash of data dumps from day to day hasn't helped.

Ontario and Quebec continue to be neck and neck. Ontario may still be slowly closing the gap but regardless it is only a week behind in total cases now.

It is hard to tell where AB and BC are going due to data gaps.

SK rising, MB flattening.

The gaps really show up in the bar charts. It's all over the place since Christmas.
5 #COVID19BC Jan 4 2021 THREAD
Similarly the seven day averages are all over the place but in general the trends appear to have ON/QC reaching higher; AB, BC, and SK reversing drops to new gains; and smaller provinces continuing previous trends down or flat.

Onto BC!
Thankfully, numbers in H came down from their peak again. We are essentially flat since the 1st week of Dec. Same with ICU. That's good, but not great. We have not crested the hill. Deaths are rising but also at more or less a stable rate.

The biggest concern for BC is the hint at a resumption of increasing cases. Notice the blue arrow at the far right-middle with "Christmas/NY". It appears we might be repeating the same pattern we have for every holiday event since Canada Day.
8 #COVID19BC Jan 4 2021 THREAD
Active Cases in BC still appear to be dropping, but this may be an illusion of very low test rates during the holidays as both DBH and others have noted.

We will need to watch that.

Note, I have a new set of graphs just for vaccines.
9 #COVID19BC Jan 4 2021 THREAD
Regionally, because of the huge gaps in BC data over the holidays, my regional cases and seven day average charts are meaningless. I wouldn't bother looking at them for a week but here they are for fun.

Last but not least, my two newest charts! Vaccinations.

The bands of colour are % vaccination of BC.

The WHO has not yet given a % needed for COVID "herd" vaccination, instead they give examples of other diseases like Measles and Polio.

I'm ready for all of the various vaccines. DBH provided breakdows of each of Pfizer and Moderna so far. Hopefully that continues. But as you can see in the linear graph, we barely register. We have a long way to go to achieve vaccinated immunity!

The log scale graph, which uses the exact same data, is able to show the small starting numbers, but the goal looks tiny and distant! I zoomed in on the 2nd pic.

Not sure which graph is more depressing but at least we can see some progress! 😂
13 #COVID19BC Jan 4 2021 THREAD
Seriously though, this is life and death.

Vaccinated immunity is months away, maybe a year or more.

We have stubbornly rising numbers.

We have a transmissible variant.

Other countries are going back to full lockdown.

We continue fighting.
END
PS.
Here are the vaccination graphs with numbers so you can see how it is distributed. 54625 total, 22690 Pfizer, 1449 Moderna.
