It's a shame Liszt gets known as the pianist who had to sell his soul to the devil to be become what he did.

The most handsome of all composers, the sight at which women fainted. The originator women throwing their underwear at him during his concerts.

This was the 1800s
He met Beethoven in 1823 when he was 12, and recalled that he kissed him on his forehead. Beethoven being fond towards anyone, especially a musician, what an honor.
What I believe he should be known for the most out of any of his achievements, is the development of the genre of symphonic poems.

He lived in Weimar with the era of Goethe and Schiller and this greatly influenced his orchestral compositions.

The genre trumped symphony soon.
How could a man, who sold his soul to the devil be honoured by the Church and compose a great oratorio, Christus.
He felt so deeply, his losses took years for him to heal.

When his father died when he was 15, he didn't touch the piano till the French July revolution came to the streets of Paris. He was 19 years old.
When he got rejected by the father of a girl he loved, he resided in such isolation that people thought he died.

When his children aged 20, and 26 died in the span of 3 years, he completed devoted himself to the Church.
The dark, ambitious and non-traditional harmony that Franz is known for was created post this.

The music then was inspiring for composers like Debussy, Ravel, Wagner, Berg etc.

Liszt got chronically depressed. Remedy of choice was a bottle of cognac and 2 of wine daily.
