He later pitched Ev Williams, who was running Odeo, the idea of an instant messaging service.

They teamed up to pursue the idea full-time.

2/10 Tim Westergren

Tim Westergren was a failed musician, part-time composer, nanny, and hippy.

He started a hardware company that allowed stores to play music, which was called Pandora.

They went bankrupt after 2 years, pivoted, and turned Pandora into an online radio channel
3/10 Jan Koum

Jan Koum dropping out of college to focus on his job at Yahoo.

Here he met Brian Acton, his cofounder.

They both left Yahoo and applied to work at Facebook...and were both rejected.

In 2009 Jan Koum founded WhatsApp and Facebook later acquired them for $21.8 B
4/10 Jack Ma

Jack Ma failed his college entrance exam 3x, applied to over 30 jobs like KFC, and was rejected by all.

He hadn't even used a computer until his 30s.

At 31, he started "China Yellow Pages," which generated $800,000 in 3 years.

At 35, Jack Ma founded Alibaba.
5/10 Ben Horowitz

Horowitz was hopping from job to job until he was 29-years old and joined Netscape as their 1st product manager.

Netscape was acquired 4 years later and at 33, Horowitz decided to start LoudCloud.

LoudCloud was later acquired for $1.6B in cash.
6/10 Sam Walton

In 1945, Sam Walton took out a $20K loan to buy a small discount store.

3 years later, he bought another store 220 miles away.

Even with two stores, financial struggles emerged.

At 44, Sam took his experiences and opened the first Walmart in 1962.
7/10 Peter Thiel

Before he was the founder of PayPal, Thiel was a miserable lawyer.

He worked at Manhattan Law Firm for 7 months before leaving to become a derivatives trader.

Three years later, at 31, Thiel founded PayPal.

Four years later PayPal was acquired for $1.5B.

Reed Hastings graduated from college, joined the Peace Corps, and before Netflix founded his first company, Pure Software, at 31.

At 37, it was acquired for $750m which gave Hastings the means to start Netflix.
9/10 Henry Ford

With a self-made fortune of $199b, Henry Ford bankrupted his first two companies before starting Ford.

His perfectionism caused missed deadlines and failed prototypes.

Ford hired James Couzen who convinced Ford to sell an imperfect car.

The rest is history.
10/10 Mark Cuban

Cuban's first gig out of school was selling computers.

After being fired, he started a software consultancy company called MicroSolutions.

7 years later, they were acquired, and Cuban netted $6m.

He used this money to start Broadcast, which sold for $5.7b.
