Nowhere in this 926 word op-ed is mentioned the 70+ million Americans who voted for Trump, a majority of which still back him. Given the nigh-universal resistance of the civil/military leadership establishment the op-ed documents, where else could the danger draw strength from?
The zeitgeist now ascendant is one of civilian revolt against an entrenched managerial class; where Trump supporters and Berniebros find common cause in anti-establishmentism.
Which makes op-eds documenting establishment luminaries slapping one another's backs fuel on the fire.

Such ill consideration suggests two causes - either an ignorance of the self-evident facts of how, indeed, the republic has reached this point; or an assumption that plebian wrath is intrinsically impotent.
Both possibilities are disquieting.

A mind reader, I am not. But I doubt anyone in my tax bracket would read that article and come away feeling that they were the intended audience.

Because we're reading a story of a civil/military managerial establishment that's either so ignorant - or uncaring - of the electorate's grievances that they think nothing of salting the wound. And that strongly suggests said establishment simply doesn't fear our votes.
That, there, is why the republic is floundering.
