45 yrs ago today, 10 men were murdered at Kingsmill. They are not just statistics. Reggie Chapman was a top-class footballer for Newry Town who didn’t have a sectarian bone in his body. His brother Walter loved the craic & would party from Fri night to Mon morning.
Kenneth Worton never left the factory at night without taking home a pencil or a bobbin for his 2 wee daughters. It was like treasure to the girls. Bob Walker was a top-class mechanic - if it had wheels, Bob could fix it.
Joe Lemmon was a carpenter with a big bass voice who sang gospel songs. Robert Freeburn was the quietest of quiet men who lived for his family. Johnny Bryans was a very religious man - the other lads watched their language in front of him.
Robert Chambers was just 18. His workmates called him the "wee late bred" because his brothers & sisters were already grown up when he was born. After he died, his parents brought flasks of tea & sandwiches to sit for hours in the graveyard to be close to their beloved boy.
John McConville's dream was to go to missionary school in Africa. His letter of acceptance arrived the day after he died. Jimmy McWhirter was known by all in the factory for taking great pride in his work. Let the lives of these 10 decent, working-class men never be forgotten.
