There's a reason why I chose to begin sobriety now.

Should I have done it sooner? Of course. But you have a hard time seeing that through the haze of the very substance that's poisoning you.

The reason why I chose to do it now is because I want to become a therapist. [Thread]
And boy, do we ever need qualified therapists.

I have some experience in group therapy settings, due to previous trauma. And I discovered that, not only do I have the temperament and the desire to help others open up, but the need for compassionate mental health pros 2/
in the US is, quite simply, massive, and will only get worse post-COVID.

We are a nation of untreated sufferers.

The amount of damage inflicted on the American due to being raised in repressive, unstable, impoverished, undereducated, dysfunctional, systemically traumatic, 3/
dogmatic, abusive environments cannot be understated.

To be an American means to live in a culture that stigmatizes a coherent understanding of one's own brain--including one's coping mechanisms and relationship to the self.

And it's one of the reasons why everything is so 4/
very, VERY fucked up right now.

How many of us look at our own upbringings not as instructional, not as a foundation for navigating life, but as a series of examples of what NOT to do?

What if it doesn't have to be this way?

We are a nation that needs to enter recovery. 5/
We are a nation of people who need to be fed, housed, cared for, and heard.

We are a nation that needs to acknowledge, and process the trauma of, its past--so that healing may be found in the present, and happiness may be found in the future.

I can't do it all, but I can 6/
help individuals in need of it.

I just need to break down the steps I need to take to make that happen, and the first one is, of course, maintaining my sobriety.

For which so, so many of you have shown me support. And I cannot thank you enough.

7/
Will you join me on my journey? Will you follow along with me as I strive, stumble, and hopefully--eventually--thrive enough so that I may be of assistance to others?

I think the world could use it.

Thanks for listening. /end
