thinking about the worst advice i've gotten in my (short) career, "being a generalist" is probably the most destructive thing i was told. actively set me back my a couple of years
having been on the hiring side at a few startups now, let me tell you - the number of times we've been looking for a "generalist" is zero (0)
i remember visiting SF a few years ago, looking for a job, and @roybahat told me that "you can't just show up here and expect startups to hire you because you get along"

he was wrong but he was also very right
anyway, at the end of that trip collective health offered me a generalist position (operations associate) with a barely livable salary and i learned my lesson right there
