Amr has a really important perspective that people need to hear. https://twitter.com/amrtgaber/status/1346170857228361728
Full disclosure: Like Kathryn, CWA has been paying for some of my legal bills. https://twitter.com/computerfemme/status/1346144348468084738?s=19
Last week I signed an AWU card. I want to explain why: as @computerfemme points out, this is happening, with or without me. So I choose to be involved, to have a say and push others, in the direction that I think is important.
There's a lot of people in AWU who care a lot about what Amr is talking about, including me. I want a union that will fight against white supremacy, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism. I want a union that puts these above all else.
There's so many specific issues at Google/alphabet that I care about and almost all of them come from a combination of those concerns.
I know there are concerns about CWA, I have plenty of my own, and concerns about AWU, too. But ultimately, AWU isn't CWA, and if CWA gets in the way of AWU doing the right thing, I'll fight on that, too.
So I choose to push for what I believe in AWU, and I know there's many others who will do the same. The future isn't written, we have to make it.
I know people will be annoyed that these concerns are being raised today and in public, but I want to thank @amrtgaber for speaking truth. If AWU ever becomes an organization that doesn't support that, I'll know it's time to walk away.
