Thanks for all the new followers - here's a quick intro on myself. I've reinvented my "career identity" 6 times so far. Let's walk through 'em.
/ "Sociology Steve." I was obsessed with my major Sociology in college. 4.0 student, TA in undergrad, Honors thesis, annoying raiser of hand all the time in class. Straight to PhD program at Upenn to become a sociology professor.
/ Young Gov't Leaders. Dropped out of PhD program, had gov't scholarship, went to DHS. I co-founded a group "Young Gov't Leaders" that grew to be well-known in its niche. I was the token "young person" on panels at venues like Harvard Kennedy School to op-ed in Wash Post.
/ Mr. GovLoop - I was worried I'd be token "young" person. Founded GovLoop, social network for gov't employees. Right time, right place. I was "Mr. GovLoop" and people knew me for always saying "awesome"
/ SaaS CMO. A few years after GovLoop got acquired, I got promoted to CMO of GovDelivery (and then Granicus). I became a private equity CMO, carrying about MQL, SQL, funnels, conversion rates. On lists for top CMOs and recruited for CMO jobs (even though I barely was one)
/ Public Safety "Suit" - next I joined a good friend to be President, Callyo (public safety SaaS). I was the "suit" (no founder "juice") with successful exits, my friend was the Founder. Two years later, successful exit to Motorola, and now I'm a public safety "expert"
/ Self-Funded Search Investor - 12 months ago, I'd never invested in a self-funded search. Today, I've invested in 7 self-funded searchers and keynoted 100+ webinar on "Tips for Self-Funded Searchers from an Investor" and talked to 150+ searchers in 2020.
/ Life is a journey. I've never had a clear path. But if I found something interesting, I always dug in 110%, read everything on the topic, and talked to everyone I could in the space.
/ Looking forward to more reinventions to come. Bring on 2021. *end thread*
