If buying and distributing laptops for kids to learn from home sounds logistically difficult, why not give them vouchers to buy one themselves instead? and for internet connections too. The government gave out vouchers for bike repair at the start of the pandemic and it was easy
This wouldn’t really cost a crazy amount of money: even buying all 1.4 million pupils elegible for free school meals a new Macbook Air and a £20/month broadband connection for a year would cost £1.8 billion. By comparison furlough costs £14 billion *every month*
Or if you wanted to buy every single one of the UK's 8.82 million pupils a decent £500 laptop and 12 months of £20-a-month broadband you'd be looking at £6.5 billion - again, absolutely doable
Eat Out To Help Out cost £849m in total... you could buy all 1.4 million kids elegible for free school meals a £400 Chromebook and 12 months of £20-a-month broadband for roughly the same amount of money (£896m). Might have been a better investment over the summer
