This is a video from solitary confinement. Take a moment & sit w/this. Imagine what it would be like to actually live there, in such a barren place w/no fresh air.
This is how 1000s of prisoners have been living during the pandemic, how 1000s of people spent their holidays.

And remember, solitary is not necessarily the "worst of the worst." It's used routinely for medical isolation, minor rule infractions, classification, mental health observation and more. https://www.themarshallproject.org/2016/03/31/highlights-from-our-justice-talk-on-solitary-confinement
I have seen people sent to solitary for things like: stealing aloe from the greenhouse, having too many towels, wearing pajamas after 8 a.m., talking back.
Before you think that the people in solitary deserve it, remember that.

And also remember: Even if they DO deserve some punishment, solitary confinement is damaging - there is a very real cost to it, in terms of the long-term impact on public safety. https://www.vice.com/en/article/vvzm5m/how-solitary-confinement-haunts-me-five-years-after-my-release
Over the past few years, states have moved to reduce their use of solitary, including in Texas. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Texas-prisons-eliminate-use-of-solitary-12219437.php
But last year, amid the pandemic, hundreds of prisons across the country went on lockdowns to stop the spread of covid. Some are still locked down, or have been on and off lockdowns for months. https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/04/15/what-happens-when-more-than-300-000-prisoners-are-locked-down
The use of solitary to the extent that we as a country did last year might be a first in U.S. history. I'm not sure there ever has been a time when so many people were in such isolation here.
So as you watch this, imagine what the long-term effects might be if you spent weeks or months here with no way to call home. No way to stretch your legs. No fresh air.
