Too many folks want to hold people outside of their tribe to a higher standard than they enforce on those in their tribe when it should be the opposite.
We use the failings of those outside the tribe to justify the misdeeds of those in our tribe. Instead, our own mistakes and misdeeds, and those of our tribe, should promote in us a kind of timidity and humility in critiquing those outside our tribe.
It’s amazing how often the thing that scares us most about the other side is mirrored by what we are willing to tolerate, and even endorse, on our own.
