Why the cancellation of A-Levels and GCSE’s will create an education gap in this generation (Thread 1/10) #alevels2021 #gcse2021 #nationallockdown
It is highly implied that the Government will cancel the summer exams of A levels and GCSE’s, as they did last year as a result in lost learning time due to the pandemic. This will have damaging effects on the educational capabilities of those currently in school.
(2/10)
Those undertaking GCSE’s will lose the incentive to work for the rest of the year, with no exams to test them. Those who have yet to start proper revision for their exams, just as many do, will no longer do so entirely. (3/10)
They will be awarded grades through the, as we saw last year, unreliable Government system. The lack of revision and reinforcement of knowledge across all the subjects one takes at GCSE will mean great quantities of knowledge taught in the three years will be lost to them. 4/10
This year-group will come out of this having lost much of what was taught to them, and whole Subjects, if not selected for A-Level, will no longer be relevant to them. Basic knowledge on essential subjects such as Maths, English and the sciences will falter among this year. 5/10
At A-Level, the grades system will again cause havoc with University admissions. Many came out favourably last year, with no exams to prove their worth, and were placed in higher academic brackets than perhaps they should have. 6/10
Equally, many who could have proved their merit through hard work in the second half of the year, will be marked down due to previous marks. They will not attain the grades they could have and will end up at Universities below the academic standard which may have suited them.
Many who thought they would have done better at A-Level and got into their university of choice will go down the route of changing to a course, not suited to them, to still get in to their desired university. They will lose the chance to study the subject they truly wish to 8/10
While a range of academic quality within a University can be beneficial. The next two years will have more imbalance between students than ever. 9/10
Overall, this will have many adverse effects on these year groups, especially in their professional lives where they may be cast aside in favour of those who actually undertook exams. This, alongside an educational information gap in these years, is why Exams must not be stopped
