Have you ever wondered if individuals with private health insurance really do like their coverage? Especially those with poor health status…?

We did, so we set out to explore this topic a little further... 1/6
My colleagues M. Khare and S. Keyhani of @UCSF and @SFVA and I looked to examine this topic a little further… 2
When we looked through the literature, we were unable to find any previous study that examined the impact of health status on satisfaction with health insurance! 3/6
Thus, we used 3 years (2016-18) of the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) – one of the nation’s largest national surveys to try to answer our question… 4/6
Among >82k respondents, we found those who were ‘sicker’ experienced higher costs, more debt, & were less satisfied w/their care. While surveys/polls state that ~8/10 Americans w/ private health insurance are happy with coverage – are they taking into account health status? 5/6
Our findings suggest that we should be wary of studies that do not control for underlying health status – as this can drastically impact one’s perception of their health insurance.”
