Gandalf is by far the superior iconic SFF mentor b/c unlike Dumbledore and Yoda, he never uncovers a terrible conspiracy by the Dark Lord and decides, "Lol let's see how this plays out."
Rather than immediately stopping Voldemort's TriWizard scheme, Dumbledore lets it happen, resulting in the death of Cedric Diggory and the resurrection of Voldemort. Yoda goes ahead and activates the insanely suspicious Clone Army, thus dooming the Republic.
A Lucas or Rowling Gandalf woulda been like, "Okay, so my plan is: let the Nazgul capture Frodo and the Ring and we'll go from there."
I will say, one thing Lucas does really well in REVENGE is having Palpatine slightly overplay his hand so that the Jedi figure out who he is and are basically forced to overthrow him, thus proving Palpatine right that they're conspiring against him.
I appreciate that Palpatine's schemes involve actual risks and gambits, rather than him just magically knowing everything (unlike Moff Fring in THE MANDALORIAN)
