Does REDD+ increase or decrease resilience of community forests?

That's the question we ask in our new paper, out in ERL

Answer: REDD+ has had mixed impacts on communities' social-ecological resilience.

Our systematic review found increases in network ties, connectivity across scales, and increased participation in decision making - factors enhancing potential for local adaptability 2/4
But we also found increased restrictions on local forest practices, rigidity in rules, and communities' natural capital being locked into carbon contracts - all factors limiting communities' ability to manage for uncertainty. 3/4
Reconciling REDD+ goals with the need for forest communities to retain adaptive capacity will be a challenge moving forward. Incorporating resilience thinking in new and existing REDD+ projects is key to long-term sustainability 4/4
