The empirical paper reports increased gun ownership and changing storage practices in the wake of COVID-19 in California. We offer that these findings are very important with regard to 3 matters that require immediate attention.
(1) Implications for safe storage initiatives; (2) safe storage initiatives specific to suicide prevention amid rising psychological distress; (3) the intersection of these matters within an inequitable society that is rife with disparities for racial/ethnic minority communities
Given the surge in new ownership of firearms in the US, we believe that the way forward includes: collaboration with firearm owning constituencies, prioritizing equity and dismantling structural racism, and more funding for research at the intersection of these matters. Fin
