The best way to climb a competitive ranked ladder is counter-intuitively not to try and climb. The best mindset I've been able to come to is that the outcome of a match between two equal parties is a coinflip, +/- the small amount of influence you have to skew it in your favour.
Focusing on outcomes makes each loss painful, and every win makes you more arrogant. You tie your sense of ability and worth 1:1 to your ELO, which is constantly fluctuating.
So what does it look like if you aren't taking every win and loss personally? https://twitter.com/SeanMombo/status/1345619509735018497?s=20

Well, you start focusing on the trends over time, instead of your/your team's performance in any given game. Are you slowly climbing, staying the same rank, or slowly falling?
But you still have to play every game fully present, and try your hardest to win.

The game's not over until the whistle blows. That's it really. You aren't playing the game specifically to win, and you certainly aren't playing to lose.
You play each game to play each game until its over. That's it. https://twitter.com/SeanMombo/status/1296523433971515395?s=20

That's detachment. Ego comes from comparisons to other people, which is exactly what your ELO on a ranked ladder is. It's your comparison against everyone else on the ladder.
A lot of people play ranked games to substantiate their ego, to validate their superiority.

If you're really egocentric about your rank, you'll end up blaming your team or w.e external factors for every loss. It's not *your* fault you lost, because you *deserve* to be a higher rank.
Every win is as your destiny demands, and every loss is the result of sabotage.

Ultimately, nothing happens if you reach your fantasy rank. You don't feel good. You just are at a higher rank. woo hoo yippee and w.e.
What was the point of caring so much and associating so strongly with your rank?

Many people mistakenly assume you need to hold onto these fantasies in order to be motivated. After all, what's the point of playing if you aren't trying to climb? What's the point if you don't care about your rank?
Well, yeah thats why life is so horrifying. There isn't a point

Why are you doing anything? Climbing a ranked ladder is fine as a goal, but if you can't appreciate every win and loss as a reward in and of itself, you're sort of missing the point of being alive. https://twitter.com/SeanMombo/status/1345604900848341000?s=20
Hit 1k in chess. cool or w.e. I wanted to get to 1k, but I didn't play the game to get to 1k. I played because I enjoyed LEARNING AND PLAYING THE GAME.
Sure its infuriating to lose sometimes, but playing chess was it's own reward. https://twitter.com/SeanMombo/status/1345497280527421446?s=20

I got to champ, (and then champ 2) in Rocket League 3v3's. That was the top ~2% of players at the time IIRC. And yeah climbing was fun, its cool to have gotten so high, but I didn't play the game to climb — I played the game because I loved it. https://twitter.com/SeanMombo/status/1085266341106466816?s=20
When I sit down to play a competitive game, I'm committing to a play session. Whether I win or lose any given game isn't the point. I'm just trying to be fully focused for my entire session. That is rewarding to me, not climbing.
