The European Centre for Disease Control have datasets covering Ireland on Covid admissions. Here are some charts to show you the past numbers and why despite the dismal news we will likely pull through.
1. Daily hospital occupancy due to covid (about 1/3 of peak)
1. Daily hospital occupancy due to covid (about 1/3 of peak)
trajectory matters, but 'case numbers' doesn't = sick people & who is catching it (younger/healthier rather than vulnerable people in care homes) also matters.
2. ICU occupancy due to covid - about 1/4 of peak (which we got through). No chart is like April thankfully.
2. ICU occupancy due to covid - about 1/4 of peak (which we got through). No chart is like April thankfully.
3. Weekly hospital admissions per 100k of population. The important comparison here (and next chart) is the final chart of mortality. Again, nowhere near April figures which is good news.
4. ICU occupancy per 100k of population is next

This is back where we were in October/early June but not like the initial wave. Remember that this week last year we had dismal headlines of hospitals overrun as per @IrishTimes https://www.irishtimes.com/news/first-week-of-2020-worst-ever-for-hospital-overcrowding-1.4135852 Which was based on Trolley Watch figures which we'll show next
Here we have 2006 to 2020 stacked, the red line is 2020 - it started off bad but is now a record low number of people on trolleys year. Covid may take away capacity due to spacing but it has also lead to very low trolley numbers (which can also be bad if sick ppl don't go+
+to hospital). Last of all we have the death statistics which represent the lives of the many people who died with or of this disease. Each blip is a person lost by loved ones and this isn't an easy conversation, but the fact that we aren't seeing massive spikes in death like we
initially had is due to better management, treatment and the change in people with covid. The elderly, people with dimentia or obesity and other risks are still at risk and along with healthcare workers they need the conditionally approved vaccine as soon as possible. The main
thing is that there is a lot to be positive about in our numbers. We may have crazy case numbers but if many are mildly ill or asymptomatic and our system manages to deal with those that are serious then that's something to be hopeful for.
