Want to help me solve a mystery?
About 3.5 miles down an abandoned road in the Florida Keys - a road closed to cars and impassible by them - I have found this submerged car. I think it's a jeep. 1/

How remote is this car? Here's a map and a link 2/ https://www.google.com/maps/place/24%C2%B035'27.8%22N+81%C2%B037'55.1%22W/@24.5910652,-81.6325312,200m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d24.5910644!4d-81.631984
When I say this road is impassable, I mean it. Many parts are only about a foot wide. The trees are grown up into where the road used to be… 3/
This road is Old State Route 4A. This section was abandoned in favor of the new overseas highway in 1945ish 4/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Highway
How did this get here? Who does it belong to? Why is it here? Was someone ~murdered~?
My next plan is to dive on this sometime this week. Where can I find the VIN? What else should I take pictures of when I'm down there? OMG I COULD LOOK IN THE GLOVE BOX!

Anyway, ideas welcome at this point. I will keep this thread updated 6/
Plan for tomorrow: diving on this to (1) check for license plate (2) see if I can get a VIN (3) Check the cup holder for loose change (4) check the glove box (5) see if there's any other interesting stuff in there that hasn't been destroyed by the saltwater

For those of you worried who think the Sheriff should handle this-while they might, I'm doubtful. Hurricane Irma, just the latest big hurricane to hit the keys, brought 4-6 ft of surge. Hundreds of boats were sunk. Cars floated off. Vehicles in weird places aren't unusual here 8/
OK turns out I have time and I think I can make it in and out before it gets dark so I’m going to try to dive on it today! Heading in... 9/
I am out! No big reports-everything is mostly rotted away. More deets and lots of video and pics when I have better service!
I have to edit a lot of video but the most important thing is this GIANT fish that lived in the front seat. It was probably 15 inches across!
While we wait for me to have time to process my video (which has no VIN or plate #, sadly), let me tell you about my trip to this car today…
I went out around 3:30. It's a 7 mile roundtrip hike. I ran some of it, but lots of it is too uneven for me to run without worrying about my ankles, so it takes a while. This meant I'd likely be finishing after dark
I got to the car, did my snorkeling and video taking, changed back into my dry clothes, and started back around 5:15pm. Sunset is just before 6. I was making pretty good time but then I remembered the prickly pears…
We used to have a MASSIVE 10 foot tall prickly pear cactus in our yard. The little hairy spines on those things are a menace. If I had to torture someone, I'd use them. They would ALWAYS end up in my fingers, even though I didn't touch it. I joyfully had it removed last spring.
The only sad part is that I love growing food products, & prickly pears are really fun to work with (except for the torturous spines). I thought I'd lost them from my life. But lots of wild prickly pear cactuses grow along this abandoned road I was walking, & the fruits are ripe!
I happened to have a roll of plastic bags with me to safely carry a load of pears home, so when I found a laden cactus, I got a pointy stick and picked a load of them. Then I like 5X bagged them to save myself and continued walking. I'd lost like 20 minutes, though
By the last mile, the sun had set. It was cloudy, so the residual light was limited. I couldn't see colors, but I could see my way. Then, I went from mostly open trail into a part canopied by trees. Essentially, into a tunnel. It got very dark and I could just barely navigate
After about 5 minutes of this, I saw a tiny prick of light. I worried for a minute that there was someone far down the trail coming toward me. Usually there's NO ONE else out here, and I didn't want to cross paths with anyone. I saw it flash again…
And then I saw a bunch more flashes from all around. Basically, in the space of just a minute, all the fireflies activated. They were everywhere in the woods making the tunnel I was walking through, and it suddenly filled with yellow sparkling light for half a mile in front of me
Our "fireflies" are different than yours, by the way! They aren't the ones with glowing abdomens; they are actually Glowing Click Beetles, and they have TWO glowing eye spots! They put on an impressive show for me!
