12 actions @williamandmary support to ensure the future of our community:

1. President Rowe should donate her $75K bonus to WM Dining Workers Fund, other student organizations, or Programs in need.

2. Renew all NTE faculty contracts for the 2021-2022 academic year.
3. Increase pay and protections for all workers (staff, graduate students, NTE and TE faculty, and other essential employees).

4. Include more NTE faculty and students in governance.

5. Revise NTE faculty titles, contracts, and hiring and retention practices.
6. Partner with & really listen to student organizations like WMFIRE and the William & Mary Workers Union.

7. Collaborate w/ student organizations, workers, & leaders & other state organizations & stakeholders to change Virginia’s labor laws & strengthen protections for workers.
8. If diversity, justice, & equity are to be central to William & Mary’s future, then it should make cluster hires of Black, Indigenous, and Latinx faculty to that end;

9. increase all faculty salaries to encourage retention;
11. invest in existing Programs, especially in Africana Studies, American Studies, Arab Studies, Latin American Studies, and Native Studies, but also in other programs central to the work of doing diversity, justice, and equity;
and 12. make a strategic plan to develop a Latinx Studies Program that fits with this vision, on the model of existing programs at peer institutions like Williams, Duke, Cornell, NYU, Princeton, Northwestern, and my alma mater, Rutgers (among others).
This investment should be material, cultural, and symbolic, and it should be made in light of the historical disinvestment in such Programs, which over decades have lost faculty lines and endowed positions that have not been replaced.
