11 years ago, former GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin started a leadership PAC, SARAH PAC, which i covered for Politics Daily in 2010. Palin was everywhere that cycle, endorsing candidates, holding campaign events, book signings. 1/x
Many of those candidates were in divisive primaries; Palin endorsed Sen. Lisa Murkowski's challenger, for instance, who won the primary. But Murkowski won the general as a write-in candidate. 2/x
But SARAH PAC spent only about 9% of the $5.7M raised contributing to candidate campaigns. Instead, lots was spent on fundraising, consultants and travel, including chartered planes. 3/x
Palin's PAC ended 2010 with $1.3 million. It closed in 2017, raising less $$ each election cycle (and giving less to candidates). The former AK governor has yet to run for office again, though some wonder if she might challenge Murkowski in 2022. 4/x
Why bring this up? Expect the same from Donald Trump as he leaves office. He created a new leadership PAC, Save America, less than a week after the election. https://twitter.com/ZachMontellaro/status/1326271903275905024 5/x
He'll be able to use that money to travel the nation, hold rallies, hire consultants, and, of course, raise more $$. Like Palin, he will endorse candidates. 6/x
One major difference? As a former president, he'll have a bigger platform and people appear more than willing to keep sending him money. But don't expect him to share the cash. (the end)
