Hot take: when picking an intern/undergrad researcher you should pick the person with less experience. Because...hear me out-internships are not jobs. They are opportunities to gain experience and are therefore most helpful to the people with the least experience.
If you are picking interns based on what they can offer you but not what you can offer them, you are a gatekeeper. If you aren't paying them a fair wage you are a gatekeeper and a slave driver. "Talent is distributed evenly, opportunity is not"-Leila Janah.
I can tell you from experience being hard working with an interest in the subject are what makes an intern successful. It takes more work to mentor students from ground 0, but if no one does it they will never get further than ground zero. Be part of the solution not the problem.
