1/4. Former Wright Field researcher DT Barish invented the sailwing, 10yrs after patenting his vortex ring chute. It had a self-inflating ramair leading edge - one of the first. This design was studied for spacecraft recovery & used as the first slope soaring paraglider in 1965.
2/4. Nasa ran wind tunnel tests of the sailwing in the early 1960’s, in efforts paralleling the tests on Rogallo’s single-surface parawings intended for spacecraft recovery. @pilliarscreatio @aerohistorian @aiaa @ADS_TC #parachute @UrbanSpaceMan64
3/4. Many credit Barish’s test flight down a hill in NY state in 1965 as the 1st instance of slope soaring, which later became the sport of paragliding. More details in this @ushpafreeflight interview. #paragliding #paragliders #parachute
