It's World Hypnotism day! This is a thread of common misconceptions and myths surrounding hypnosis I will be doing throughout today ✨
1. "Hypnosis essentially removes free will" No! First of all human free will is pretty nebulous in the best of times, and is constantly subject to external pressures and reinforcement. Go read more on if free will is real or not. There is k1nk play that intentionally simulates..
the erasure or removal of free will, but that free will is conceptualized by the subject and intentionally given away. But fundamentally, you can enter a hypnotic state without your "free will" being compromised in anyway, it just varies on what you want to play with.
2. "Hypnosis is inherently noncon and creepy" Well that is total horseshit. Tbh hypnotic trance is a really pleasant experience for a lot of people, some of whom enjoy it in a sexual context, others that don't. Some people see dark fantasy erotica and assume it reflects reality.
3. "Being in hypnotic trance makes you better at doing things." Not necessarily, so many variables. I, for one, am shit at using my hands when in a hypnotic state, some people are catatonically relaxed most trances, and others can move about no problem until suggested otherwise.
But to make it clear that whole "you only use 10% of ur brain, and hypnosis activates the whole brain" is also total horseshit. Hypnosis will never give you superpowers, could make you better at completing one task, or worse, it depends on the intentions of the hypnotist
4. "Hypnosis isn't real" Now, now, that's a silly statement. Is any phenomenon of the brain "real"? Like depression is real but you couldn't, pour paint on it. Hypnotic trances are a regular occurrence in the human brain, it's a particular kind of focus and flow state.
5. "Being hypnotized is an inherently submissive act." I mean it might be for you, but it's not necessarily for everyone. You can use hypnosis in any kind of power dynamic. You can be a top and be hypnotized by your sub, or be switches and trance eachother.
There's no need to apply rules or binaries to your sexual expression, and certainly don't do it to anyone else's. Additionally, some people use hypnosis for therapy, without a personal feeling of kink.
