Hey! we’re gonna learn!!!

What’s the Dream Gap?
+ some thoughts about it in relation to F1
The Dream Gap describes the phenomenon where young girls, due to societal constructs that women are less valuable + than men, are held back from living up to their full potential.
Studies conducted by NYU, UOI, and Princeton have shown that starting at age 5, many girls start to develop severe limiting self-beliefs. They stop believing they can be whatever they dream of; they stop believing they can fill vital and powerful roles.

This is the Dream Gap.
Research shows children pick up on cultural stereotypes from a young age that suggest women are not as smart or as capable as men.
These stereotypes are visible to them through media and the adults who subtly reinforce them, often unconsciously.
When young girls hear something is for boys, they can internalize that, worsening the feeling the feeling that they are not as good as boys.

The mindset, very subtly, shifts to “I can’t do this, so I won’t try.”
The Dream Gap describes the serve erosion of young girls confidence, that is often carried into adulthood.

She is taught when she was young that girls are not as smart. So when you tell your co-worker how smart she is she says

“Not really, i just work a lot”
The Dream Gap is made worse by a lot, like the dreaded word “too.”

It’s not “women can be engineers too.”

It’s “women can be engineers.”

It’s not “women can drive in F1 too.”

It’s “women can drive in F1.”

Don’t teach young girls that they are an afterthought, 2nd to boys.
If F1 believes in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment, they need to look at the foundation of the systemic barriers that are blocking that from happening.

Encourage young girls to dream of being in F1 by showing all the awesome women who are there now!
Not one person can close the dream gap.
F1 can’t close it alone either.

We gotta put our heads together and work hard to dismantle the barriers: educational, extra-curricular, and more, that are blocking young girls from believing they can achieve their dreams.
