There are some reasons behind not entering into Temple during periods, but some people don't understand this and shows hinduism as regressive religion.

Entering into a temple- A Thread
Well, like a human body, there are energy points on the earth which has the maximum energy. These are also the places where the energy is most as well as balanced. When a menstruating women touches the idol,
The energy which was balanced until now, more heat is added to it due to exchange of energy. This can cause the stone structure behaving abnormally. Also, nobody other than the priest is allowed to touch the idol only after taking bath in order to prevent any exchange of heat.
Furthermore, still a minute amount of exchange does take place when people visit, because of which the idol is washed with water, curd, sandalwood, milk, etc. to keep it cool.

The area where, temples are built are energy centers, thus one feels balanced when they visit.
Our body is governed by three main doshas which include
Vata - regulating movement (air)
Pitta - transferring of elements (bile)
Kapha - providing strength, regulating heat and energy in the body (fire)
A slight deviation or fluctuation in any of these can cause major changes.
These changes are too subtle to identify but take up major portions of our system.

During menstruation the amount of kapha increases in body leading to excess of energy. This turns the form into a energy ball which is later on used during ovulation.
The pushing out of blood is characterised by vata and any fluctuation in vata can lead to menstrual disorders too. This flow of vata or energy is downward during menstruation. Whereas in temples while circumbulating the garbha gruha energy flows upward in the body.
This can gradually turn the flow of energy from downward to upward thereby blocking the free flow of pitta. These can lead to cramps and hormonal fluctuations. People are told to enter the temple empty stomach to restrict any blockage of energy in to maintain balance of chakras)
