The appointment of @MakisVoridis as the new Greek minister of interior in the New Democracy government today is indicative of the worrying presence of the far right in the Greek government. (short thread)
1. As a student Voridis formed the fascist student group “Free Students” that painted the walls with swastikas and saluted each other with "Heil Hitler." https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/1.5202708
2. After getting expelled (!) from Athens University's law school, he headed the youth wing of the far right party founded by the former dictator Georgios Papadopoulos. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/dec/16/rise-greek-far-right-turmoil
3. Along with the renowned Greek nazi Konstantinos Plevris, they tried to unify the fractionalized Greek extreme right by founding the Hellenic Front party (influenced by Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front)
4. Eventually he managed to get elected as an MP with the far right party LAOS. From there he entered the coalition government of 2011 and when LAOS collapsed, he jumped to New Democracy.
5. Today he was appointed by Greek PM Mitsotakis in one of the most important government posts.
