Jarasandh who was a king of Magadh was one of the most powerful rulers in ancient India during Mahabharata times.

He was so powerful that more than half of the king's from Indian subcontinent and outside paid him taxes.
He was doing a Yajna of Lord Shiva and he had pledged to sacrifice 100 kings at the end of Yajna.
He had kept those 100 kings in his Custody.
If he would become successful in his Yajna, he would become most powerful ruler in entire world and no one could defeat him.
He was father in law of Kansa, so he was enemy of Shri Krishna and thus Pandavas.

Shri Krishna advised Yuddhisthir to kill Jarasandh before starting Rajsuya Yajna which later was planning.
Jarasandh had a vow to give what anyone asked him.
Thus Bheem, Shri Krishna and Arjuna disguised as Brahmchari and they asked jarasandh to give them a wrestling fight with himself.
Rest you all know is Itihas.
Yuddhisthir became Samrat after successfully completing the Rajsuya Yajna.

Magadh which is Current day Bihar was center of power for thousands of years ago.
