i can't even begin to describe how much i hate this stupid youtube video and how antithetical it is to the original trilogy.
i wouldn't be so mean about this video if it didn't show up in my recommendations EVERY. FUCKING. DAY. and on top of that all the fans who praise it and act like its literally better than the original trilogy when what it really is is a bunch of flashy fanfic bullshit
everyone complaining about greedo shooting first yet you people will accept THIS??? they literally changed the entire scene. what was supposed to be a tense, measured and careful duel was turned into a ridiculous martial arts spectacle. this is 100% worse than what lucas did
reminds me of all that annoying adywan bullshit. fans are so inconsistent. dont change star wars except if you're going to add a bunch of ridiculous fan fic action movie horseshit and then it's ok to change star wars??? lol make it make sense
the scene isn't even meant to be this epic duel. it's literally intercut with han, leia and luke escaping. the whole point is obi wan is just buying them time. if you think he came into that fight with the intention to beat the shit out of vader u missed the point
literally all the emphasis in this entire segment of the film is han and luke rescuing leia and getting out of these. obi wan's job was to deactivate the shield and buy them time to get out, not to have some massive pissing contest with his old enemy like a pissed off frat boy
i get that it might look "old" to a kid who grew up on the prequels but the prequels showcased the jedi in their prime at the height of their power and arrogance. if old obi wan was fighting the same way it would just feel off because it'd show he hasn't learnt anything
this obi wan is coming into the fight not to get revenge or to finally cut off loose ends (like the flashy youtube video suggests with its frantic and "epic" style) but to simply help his friends escape. he's not fighting for his life. he knows he's gonna die and he accepts that.
that's what i like about the original trilogy it portrays the jedi not as a bunch of epic cool awesome badasses, they're fucking MONKS. they're chill as fuck and they're just here to make peace and stop the fighting. that's why luke throwing the lightsaber away in ROTJ is so neat
if obi wan was fighting like some kind of martial arts god right before luke saw him fade away what lesson does that teach luke? luke throwing the lightsaber away wouldn't really have a thematic connection to anything his mentor did in ANH so the arc is kind of lost
on top of that....
the video is just dumb lol. it doesn't look good.
plus why add all these AGONIZINGLY long cutaways of vader just... standing there behind the door. like an idiot, lol. was this bit meant to be funny?

i know i'm overanalysing here but i see this a lot....
a lot of star wars fans seem to secretly reject the idea that the jedi are about pacifism. i've noticed this since TLJ. people were acting like luke was out of character in that film when he literally did what obi wan did:

there's a pretty good chance that the same fans who praise this awful youtube have just been misreading that scene from ANH all this time... and that's probably why they hate luke in TLJ. they fucking missed the entire character arc and everything he learned from obi wan.
i think it's really important to teach kids when to fight and when not to fight, and that fighting is a last resort and that there are often better ways to win. sometimes that means taking a hit for your friends and/or stepping back.
the cool thing about star wars is that it's a fantasy story that's not about violence. the hero doesnt slay dragons. there isn't as much of a seperation between 'us' and 'them', friend and enemy. every enemy is a potential friend if you play your cards right.
i think it's amazing that in both these fights the hero stops fighting and lets the villain take a swing, only for the villain to realise the swing didn't satiate his bloodthirst... and this leads him down the road of redemption. that's some great storytelling.
how does a flashy, over-choreographed fight sequence add anything to this story and how is it thematically relevant at all to the jedi's code of pacifism?
not a trick question. it doesn't add anything. if anything it completely distracts from the point and is just... irritating.

@ people quoting this entire thread with "i disagree"
if you disagree why dont you explain exactly what you disagree with and how your opinion differs from mine? just informing me that you disagree isn't the same as having a conversation. what am i supposed to do with that info?
