So some amazing facts I've learned over the last few days about the Oxford Vax rollout - the biggest manufacturing and public health project in human history.
2 BILLION doses will be manufactured at sites globally in CY2021, most delivered at cost. https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN296292?__twitter_impression=true

The cost of the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine looks to be US$3-4 which is 6-15x cheaper than other vaccines.
It's also easy to ship and store, with vaccines stored in regular fridges versus supercooled cryogenic containers. https://www.9news.com.au/world/coronavirus-vaccine-oxford-more-for-the-world-moderna-pfizer/04104dd0-fee9-409f-ab27-dfeec3f657ca

Serum Institute India will have 100 million doses ready to go *within days*.
The pace and scale of this manufacturing process is unlike any we've seen in human history.
India is flexing as an emerging manufacturing and political superpower. https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/serum-institute-to-have-100-million-doses-of-vaccine-by-early-january/article33464135.ece

In committing to COVAX, the collaborative effort to vaccinate the Global South with billions of doses at cost, AstraZeneca+Oxford are demonstrating that a commitment to humanity and social impact, beats conventional modes of business (Pfizer+Moderna will not contribute to COVAX)
Australians should feel proud we took a globally leading role in the Oxford Vax's pre-clinical and clinical trial testing at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP). ACDP is the only lab of its kind in the southern hemisphere. https://www.csiro.au/en/News/News-releases/2020/CSIRO-welcomes-vaccine-agreement-with-AstraZeneca
Many hundreds of Australians were also involved in the UQ vax which didn't make it through clinical trial, but that research is not wasted. Incredible learnings from that development may allow us to reduce the time for future vax dev from months to weeks. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-01-03/backup-coronavirus-vaccines-to-be-trialled-in-australia/13028598
If we're able to get safety trials completed for the core of these vaccines undertaken strategically, it may be possible to even reduce clinical trial->approval times, so we're ready for future pandemics, although the key with approvals is safety, always. https://theconversation.com/should-australians-be-worried-about-waiting-for-a-covid-vaccine-when-the-uk-has-just-approved-pfizers-151287
Addendum - here's a fantastic thread by Dr Allen Cheng, a leading epidemiologist working closely with the Australian government and the TGA on why the TGA is taking longer to review all the safety and efficacy evidence for the Covid-19 vaccines. https://twitter.com/peripatetical/status/1346036208116269059?s=19
