5 BIG questions for youth unemployment in 2021: a short thread >

1/7
1. How high will youth unemployment go?

Even with extended furlough & vaccines, record highs are not out of the question.

@OBR_UK forecast all-age unemployment to peak in Apr-Jun at 7.5%. Last time that happened, youth unemployment soared above 20%. UK record is 22%.

2. How fast can the youth jobs market recover?

It took over 7 yrs for youth unemployment to recover post-2008 recession!

A 'roaring 20s' bounce-back in hospitality sector would offer a boost, but we need hiring across sectors pre-Sept when the Class of 2021 look for work.

3. Will young people continue to ‘ride out the storm’ by choosing education over job hunting?

There are currently record numbers studying while not looking or work.

Will we see the same in 2021? Have they chosen courses beneficial for them? Will we see drop-outs?

4. Will the new immigration system have an impact?

Some jobs (e.g. most waiting staff) will not be open to most new migrants. A void for education-leavers to fill?

Although 27% of waiting staff are born abroad, only 6% arrived in past 5 yrs. See https://www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications/home-and-away/

5. Will ‘Kickstart’ be a success?

According to @CIPD, 1/3 of employers are interested in providing a placement. Could help Gov’t exceed 250,000 target.

To be a great success, the jobs must go to those who need them most & develop each individual.

There are, of course, many other questions.

Answers will come from @PrincesTrust @LearnWorkUK @EmploymtStudies @resfoundation @YF_Foundation @YEUK2012 @ImpetusPEF @MovementToWork @CIPD @AoC_info & more.

A big year for #youthemploymentgroup & a big task for government.
