This poster is pretty horrible. It reinforces stereotypes, rather than invert them, as Dalit leaders have historically done. Mayawati wore elegant clothes, flaunted her jewellery and handbags as a symbol of Dalit empowerment and aspiration. "Give her the broom" was in fact the https://twitter.com/RichaChadha/status/1345968938589437953
casteist UC response, indignant at the sight of a Dalit asserting her success. Similarly, Ambedkar, wore Western suits in contrast to the idea of a simple kurta pyjama wearing politician (or Gandhi's austere loincloth) because it exuded Dalit empowerment. Or Kanshiram's
safari suits or shirt trousers that spelled bourgeois respectability of the time. None of these politicians needed to make a show of poverty because their constituents understood poverty intimately and aspired to transcend it. The poster of the film, presumably well intended,
does the reverse- confine the Dalit leader to the stereotype of her caste- rag tag clothes & broom, which these actual Dalit leaders took pains to destroy. Which reminds that making a film about Dalit icons should include Dalits at every end of process- story, cast and execution.
