I’ve been thinking about why conservative evangelical “pro-lifers” are silent on most human rights issues, and I believe it comes down to the distinction between “pro-life” and “pro-*innocent* life”. 1/
According to evangelical theology, no one is innocent except the unborn (and straight white men, which we’ll get to), and by extension they’re the only ones worthy of advocating for. Everyone else is deserving of death. 2/
Conservative evangelicalism is a type of Gnosticism, where a certain group of people has been Chosen to bear Special Knowledge (often anti-materialist knowledge; i.e. the body is evil). Evangelicals see themselves as the arbiters of God’s justice, and not in a merciful way. 3/
White supremacist violence and genocide are baked into the DNA of white evangelicalism (and all its variants) because of their interpretation of Total Depravity. Mix in a little Prosperity Gospel and you’ve got the perfect classist, racist propaganda machine. 4/
This is also why a white man can shoot up a school, suicide bomb a metropolitan street, or abuse his political office to wage biological warfare against Black communities. And if he’s successful (or “presuccessful”, as all white Americans are), he’s morally justified. 5/
This is why they don’t care about any number of issues that involve mass suffering of vulnerable populations in the US. In their eyes, it’s the Will of God and we deserve it. 6/6
