tbh rin’s backstory gets undermined a lot bc sesshomaru’s kindness toward her (although it’s very clear that he’s always giving her a basic level of respect, even toward her 2nd death where it took losing her again to understand the gravity of her life), but she was always aware—
of the cruelties of life, being an orphan that was pitied on & not harboring animosity for her village despite the fact that they beat her & got upset at her feeding herself. it’s just her pain wasn’t used to hate the world, but be more understanding towards it. it’s why she’s—
kind to kagura in her final days despite knowing she’s the one who kidnapped her. it’s why she doesn’t force kohaku to not talk bc she has stuff she wants to repress herself. it’s why she’s constantly calling sesshomaru’s heart kind bc it is (as we seen his complicated—
relationship with inuyasha be less hostile & more finishing the job toga was unable to complete). it’s why she cares about jaken’s safety and life. it’s why she begs sesshomaru to not join naraku bc even though that would be his nature as a demon, that’s not his true feelings.
it really bugs me that there’s this fanon image that rin would do anything for sesshomaru when that’s NEVER been the narrative. it’s sesshomaru who goes out of HIS way for her, esp in the ‘forever with lord sesshormaru’ episode where rin’s personal reasons to stay w/ him & jaken—
is bc of her fear of humans & her lack of a home besides anywhere else but them. the way people take that one scene of her standing still as per his request (it’s was literally for her safety LOL) & have run with it to create this narrative that she’s obedient to the point of—
not having a mind of her own completely ignores what made rin & sesshomaru an interesting dynamic in the first place. it’s not that he’s her caretaker & she’s his minion (bc they barely follow the rules of that lmao), but it’s the fact that they’re meeting at two different life—
points, respect e/o’s limitations & strengths, AND see e/o as equals.
nonetheless, a lot of people miss the fact that sesshomaru does NOT look down at rin. in fact, in a world where he hates humans and demons alike, she’s literally one of the rare—
nonetheless, a lot of people miss the fact that sesshomaru does NOT look down at rin. in fact, in a world where he hates humans and demons alike, she’s literally one of the rare—
if not the ONLY— people that sesshomaru treats as an equal, and no, it’s not about power dynamics bc that’s literally the WHOLE point of why she changes his life. it’s the fact that the lowliest person of the food chain in their world is given the same respect as he selfishly—
gives himself. and we see how that’s a created a domino effect to sesshomaru giving mercy to kagura, someone he could’ve helped but constantly chosen not to until it was too late, and inuyasha, who constantly hurts his pride as a son & demon, but it’s duty & obligation—
not as just a brother, but as simple decency of his life (hence the whole ‘use tessaiga to control his demon blood’ plot)... & this all begins bc rin showed him kindness & believes he can reciprocate that. it’s her constantly telling him & everyone else that he’s kind. mind you,
not even toga thought sesshomaru would be so LOL (aka all the precautions to protect inuyasha). his mom, jaken, and literally everyone who knows him thinks he’s awful (for good reason). but here’s rin, FULLY aware of who he is btw, still pushing him as a kind person.
and you know what LMAO! his change did not start after obtaining tenseiga, or toga’s death, or meeting naraku, or reuniting with inuyasha, or meeting kagome, or etc etc. it started after he almost died & no one came for him besides this little girl that pitied & nursed him.
and then he reciprocates that kindness when rin was about to be eaten by wolves & she had no one herself: no family, no friends, no village, no home. (which if you ask me, is how he was behaving like despite the fact that he still had everything).
idk but joining inutwit, there’s so much misrepresentation of rin in general, which I get when there’s so much content for everyone else & even shippers see her as sesshomaru’s wife vs. her own individual character. but man, i wish there wasn’t bc there’s so much to learn—
from her. nonetheless, so much of her interactions with other characters is supportive, empathetic & comes from self-reflection of her own isolation. it’s why her being left at kaede’s is a big deal bc it truly completed her small arc.
NONETHELESS, in yashahime, it’s so ironic that everyone talks about rin being indebted to sesshomaru when all what we’ve learned about him — walking away from his title & power (aka his old goals) — is not a requirement for her to be in his life. it’s his to be in HERS! bye!
