Odishan temples evolved as a regional variation of the Nagara architecture. One of the first temples is the Parasuramesvara temple at Bhubaneshwar.

Earlier temples didn't have the mukha-mandapa or the jagamohana. And later temples additionally had the natamandapa and the bhogamanadapa. Parasuramesvara temple sit at the cross-roads of temple evolution in Odisha.

Unlike other temples of Nagara style, the sanctum with the tower is known as rekha deul (vs vimana) and the jagamohana is known as bhadra/pidha deul.
The sanctum's vertical axis is divided into pishta (pedestal), bada (sanctum cella), gandi/sikhara (tower) and mastaka (crown)

The mastaka or crowning elements are divided into beki/kantha (the neck), amla/amalaka-sila (the flattened spheroid with ribbed edges), khapuri (flat covering of amla, kalasa (water jar) and dhvaja/ayudha (emblem of the deity) - here it's dedicated to Shiva.
