On 21 April 1966 Haile Selassie made a state visit to Jamaica. Here's a clip.

A huge crowd of Rastafaris was on hand to greet him. They broke thru police lines & surrounded the aircraft. The authorities had to ask Ras Mortimer Planno to escort the emperor to his car. 1/

Rastafarianism began in the 1930s, when preachers proclaimed that Selassie was the returned Jesus.

In the 1950s militant leaders sought to capture Kingston for Selassie; & in 1960 Claudius Henry, leader of the African Reformed Church, was arrested for treason. Here's a clip.

Selassie's 1966 visit to Jamaica was at the invitation of government, which hoped to exert control over the Rastafaris.

Here's a print report. The emperor advised the Rastas to liberate Jamaica before they immigrated to Ethiopia.

Selassie also visited Senegal and Haiti during his 1966 trip.

Here he with Senghor in Dakar, on his way to Jamaica. His visit overlapped with the First World Festival of Negro Arts, which Senghor organised.
