100 people had 100 Rupees distributed among them.
80 of them had Paise 25 each.
20 of them had Rupees 4 each.
There was an election among them to choose the rulers. 1/n
There were some candidates with a manifesto of 'development' through free-trade, freedom and just laws. There were others who were for equality, 'alleviation of poverty', 'social justice'. 2/n
The first set of candidates said, "keep what you have, exchange-freely and persue your happiness", the second set of candidates said, "We'll take Rupee 1 from those who have more money and give Paise 5 each to the poor" 3/n
The second set of candidates always won, because votes of those who had Rs. 4 each never mattered. Election after election, it was always the second set of candidates who won. 4/n
They had found one trick that could make them always win: Always keep the number of people with Paise 25, as large as possible. 5/n
Over a period of time, some among the 80, figured out the trick. They demanded more freedom to earn for themselves. The rulers were forced to give them freedom. More started having more than Paise 25. 6/n
Some of them even started to earn more than Rupee 1. The rulers now had to come up with something different. They said, we'll take a little from those who have more than Rupee 1 and give it to the poor. 7/n
Once the new set of rules became well accepted as a 'just' system, candidates started looking for new agenda points in their manifestos. They discovered that it was mostly men who were working outside their homes and women worked at home. 8/n
'Women empowerment', 'gender equality' became new election planks. 9/n
They figured that as long as people are self-sufficient, content, happy they couldn't win elections. Newer ways of creating scarcity, insecurity, discontent, envy had to be discovered, created, encouraged and sustained. 10/n
Such a system of perpetual strife came to be known as democracy. Exploitation, predation, loot, tyranny became inherent quality of the system. If you ever felt that there's something wrong, it's the system itself not 'some people misusing the system'. 11/n
