Exposing Reva Goetz, the corrupt judge who put Britney Spears under a conservatorship - a #FreeBritney thread
Reva Goetz got her law degree from Whittier Law School, one of the worst institutions in the nation that actually had to be shut down because of low student achievement. #FreeBritney
Reva Goetz is known as having a horrible track record as a judge. She's "extremely unprofessional," a "disgusting judge who lacks any form of integrity or ethics." "She doesn't care about the law at all." "Literally the worst judge I've ever appeared before." #FreeBritney
Reva Goetz has a score of only 1.7/10 from attorneys who've reviewed her performance on the Robbing Room. It's even worse, 1.0/10, from non-attorneys who've be unfortunate enough to hav their cases appear before her. #FreeBritney
Judge Reva Goetz has presided over multiple conservatorship cases, not only over Britney Spears, but over other celebrities like Mickey Rooney and Zsa Zsa Gabor and many other lesser-profile victims such as Jean Tanaka and Antoinette Townsend. #FreeBritney
On February 1st, 2008, Britney's estranged father Jamie filed for a temporary conservatorship over her estate and personal affairs, claiming without evidence that she had a "dementia-related illness." #FreeBritney
Reva Goetz granted the request and put Britney under a temporary conservatorship, giving her father and an attorney Andrew Wallet control of her finances and daily life, who she can see, what she can do, and what she can spend her money on. #FreeBritney
By law, a conservatee must be notified 5 days in advance so they can get legal representation before someone takes total control of their life. However, Britney's father asked the court to WAIVE this right and Judge Reva Goetz granted it, keeping Britney in the dark. #FreeBritney
Britney attempted to hire attorney Adam Streisand to help her fight this conservatorship, saying she did not want her father in control of her finances. But Reva Goetz ejected him for the courtroom and deemed Britney unable to hire an attorney of her choice. #FreeBritney
Instead, Reva Goetz appointed attorney Sam Ingham to serve as Britney's court-appointed counsel. He is supposed to be representing Britney, but he has done very little to fight the conservatorship over the past decade. #FreeBritney
By this point, there had not been a capacity declaration deeming Britney unable to make her own decisions. They had tried to get one from her psychiatrist from 2007, Dr. James Long, but he refused. #FreeBritney
Sam Ingham then suggested the evaluation be done by Dr. Steven Marmer. Reva Goetz granted this request, ordering Dr. Marmer to file a report by February 13th. #FreeBritney
However, just 2 days later, they were back in court with a capacity declaration not from Dr. Marmer, but from Dr. James Spar who declared that Britney lacked the capacity to hire an attorney or attend these hearings. Reva Goetz confirmed her rulings on this basis. #FreeBritney
Once they deemed Britney unable to participate in her own legal proceedings, Judge Reva Goetz started dolling out Britney's money. Her dad was given a paycheck of $2,500 per week and a brand new car. #FreeBritney
Meanwhile, Judge Goetz gave Britney an allowance of $1,500 a week. That's less than her father and more attorneys who were approved by the judge to start negotiating contracts to get Britney back to work. #FreeBritney
On March 17th, Judge Goetz gave attorneys for Britney's conservatorship permission to sell off her vehicles. #FreeBritney
Britney didn't stop fighting. She tried to hire another attorney Jon Eardley who attempted to bring her case from state to federal court saying her civil rights were being violated "all without the benefit of a hearing where Ms. Spears would be present." #FreeBritney
Mr. Eardley brought in professor William McGovern, an expert who testified that Britney's right to notice and right to an attorney were indeed violated by Judge Reva Goetz and therefore the conservatorship orders should have been good for no more than 30 days. #FreeBritney
Unfortunately, they would not hear the case because Judge Reva Goetz had already deemed Britney unable to hire an attorney of her own choice, and therefore Jon Eardley wasn't able to represent her in the case. #FreeBritney
Judge Goetz would then begin a trial over whether to make Britney's conservatorship permanent. She started by again declaring her unfit to participate in the proceedings because her "diagnosis is not complete" and she "needs" more medical tests. #FreeBritney
Judge Goetz extended the temporary conservatorship to the end of the year saying Britney "reluctantly agreed." She also said the conservatorship could end sooner because Britney's "demeanor and behavior has improved." #FreeBritney
When it came time to rule, Judge Goetz made Britney's conservatorship permanent saying it was "necessary and appropriate" because Britney was subject to "undue influence." This will be in place for the rest of her life, unless Britney moves to have it terminated. #FreeBritney
On the same day, Reva Goetz deemed Britney unable to testify in a lawsuit brought by her former manager Johnny Wright. #FreeBritney
Along with granting the permanent conservatorship, Judge Reva Goetz increased the amount Britney's father would be paid from her estate, including back pay. #FreeBritney
On September 15th, 2009, Judge Reva Goetz hosted a paid event with Britney's co-conservator Andrew Wallet and an attorney for her father Geraldine Wyle. The event was called "Conservatorships for the High Profile Public Figure, Does it Work?" #FreeBritney
At the same time, Reva Goetz is agreeing to give these same people significant amounts of money from Britney's estate. Talk about a conflict of interest! #FreeBritney
On December 11th, 2009, Judge Goetz agrees to a put Courtney Love's child Frances Bean Cobain under a conservatorship. Frances owns the publicity rights to her father Kurt Cobain's name and likeness. Notice it's the same attorneys who work for Britney's father! #FreeBritney
However, Judge Goetz was DISQUALIFIED from continuing to serve on Courtney Love's case because the same attorneys work on Britney's case and therefore the judge would be "prejudiced" towards one party. #FreeBritney
On May 8th, 2010, Judge Goetz hosted a training program with none other than Sam Ingham (Britney's court appointed attorney) and James Spar (who was the only doctor they could get to file a capacity declaration.) #FreeBritney
In September 2010, Britney met with Judge Reva Goetz who said they had a "very nice conversation" but made no changes to her conservatorship arrangement. Britney was seen crying after the hearing. #FreeBritney
Attorney Katerina Perreault, who worked at Britney co-conservator Andrew Wallet's law firm, said she saw him and Judge Goetz together attending the Femme Fatale tour. She deemed Britney incapable of making her own decisions, yet she is perfectly fine to tour? #FreeBritney
Also in 2011, Judge Goetz put Mickey Rooney under a conservatorship at the request of attorney Vivian Thoreen, who you may recall is also involved in Britney's conservatorship case to this day #FreeBritney
When Britney Spears was sued by Brand Sense over a fragrance dispute, Reva Goetz continued to deem her "not fit to testify" under a deposition. #FreeBritney
In 2012, Britney Spears met with Reva Goetz for only 5 minutes and she was apparently "impressed" enough to approve her going on the XFactor as a judge. #FreeBritney
Reva Goetz also added Britney's fiance Jason Trawick as a co-conservator over Britney's personal affairs. #FreeBritney
However, later that year, Britney told Judge Reva Goetz in her chambers that she was "ready for the conservatorship to end" saying she has to be "the only person under a conservatorship that has managed to land a $15 million work contract." #FreeBritney
These requests for more freedom seemed to fall on deaf ears, though, as Judge Goetz was the only person that could end the conservatorship and she didn't. #FreeBritney
In January 2013, Judge Goetz approved the resignation of Britney's fiance Jason Trawick as her conservator after they announced the two were splitting up. #FreeBritney
In July 2013, Britney told Judge Goetz she was "ready and excited" to start her Las Vegas residency. #FreeBritney
However, experts began questioning the conservatorship around this time. How can someone so productive still be deemed unable to make their own decisions? They suspect it's about the money because her Vegas contract says the conservatorship must be in place. #FreeBritney
As Britney's residency became a success, Judge Goetz agreed to increase the money her conservators were taking from her estate every year. #FreeBritney
Meanwhile, in her "view from the bench," Reva Goetz says the initial conservatorship hearings were hard for her because "some people present very well and appear to understand, but in reality they do not." WHAT? #FreeBritney
In 2015, Judge Goetz retired from the bench and joined the mediation firm Alternative Resolution Center (labelled "a place were bad judges can continue to abuse the public for a salary") where she proudly displayed that she handled Britney's conservatorship case. #FreeBritney
In 2017, Judge Goetz spoke out against transgender individuals who claimed insensitive treatment in the Los Angeles court system. Reva tried to justify it, saying judges have to asking "probing - even uncomfortable - questions." #FreeBritney
Judge Goetz switched to JAMS mediation firm in 2020 where she still lists Britney's conservatorship as one of her professional accomplishments. #FreeBritney
Harvard Professor Peter Murray says ADR professionals such as JAMS, where Reva Goetz now works, engage in practices that lead to "insidious corruption." #FreeBritney
In fact, a federal judge recently slammed JAMS for failing to disclose their financial interests and firm contacts that could lead to bias when mediating cases. #FreeBritney
One article went so far as to call it "financial rape of the elderly" and used a case involving Reva Goetz as an example of how judges are using mediation firms to take advantage of the most vulnerable. #FreeBritney
Judge Goetz says the one group she would never want to get investigating her is the federal government. #FreeBritney
Judge Reva Goetz needs to be investigated for not only what she did to Britney Spears, but also what she did to hundreds if not thousands of other vulnerable people who were put under her corrupt conservatorships. #FreeBritney
