The policy is subordinate in significance to the infrastructure built by those ambitions (e.g. satellites, aircraft carriers) which will be wielded by future presidential administrations even if voters don't realize it. https://twitter.com/nikhil_palsingh/status/1345880142795694082
The world historical ambitions of the United States have always been framed in *opposition* to the ambitions of another state, so there's no guarantee they won't come roaring back in even more destructive and self-destructive ways.
Indeed, there's a whole generation of American 20-year-olds from conservative families who truly believe China invented and distributed COVID-19 around the world to undermine the US. Some of those people will enter politics.
Trump offered a vision of that world-historical mission in the form of white-supremacist piracy, stripped of any humanitarian pretense, which the chattering classes deemed ''dovish'' until he started pardoning war criminals over the objections of military commanders.
What we're likely to see is a groundswell, from the public, of a ''world-historical'' purpose for the US in the form of ''confronting'' China, which will have the endorsement of people coming into political consciousness in 2020.
The question is whether that groundswell will come in the form of broad diplomatic engagement and trade wars or in the form of an all-out nuclear holocaust. As long as nuclear weapons exist in the US, Russia and China, there's no end to their world historic role.
