People are dying so let’s give 1 dose of a proven vaccine and a half dose of hydroxychloroquine and call it good
Or, alternatively, we could take a deep breath and follow the science
Which is it?

There is no way out of the fact that efficacy is only proven for 2 full strength doses.
Immunological handwaving sounds cool but isn’t a valid foundation for decisions because we don’t have a clearcut surrogate of protection
The rest is just wishful thinking

With incidence rates as high as they are now, an alternative dosing schedule could be tested quickly
This is far preferable to global un-consented human experimentation
This is far preferable to global un-consented human experimentation
Such a trial would also be FAR easier to conduct than to retool global vaccine administration systems midstream to give a different unproven dosing schedule
Imagine what sort of chaos that kind of confidence un-inspiring evidence-free change of course could elicit in vaccine distribution systems that are just now trying to work out the kinks and get moving
If there’s anything we’ve learned this year it’s how much desperation can tempt otherwise smart people to believe nonsense.
We have to steer clear of desperation here. The stakes are too high

This isn’t one person being given a questionable dose of hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin or some other nonsense. We are talking about MILLIONS of vaccinees!
OF COURSE it’s a bad idea to give millions of people a vaccine regimen that has not been shown to be efficacious. We’re we not exhausted and desperate we wouldn’t even consider it
A key piece of advice we give trainees when they are first running codes blue: check your own pulse. Breathe deep. Get calm. Your adrenaline needs to not endanger the patient.
Multiply that by the globe and you see the stakes here.
Take a deep breath. Recover common sense. Stick to the science. Do more. And stop giving folks who are hesitant about vaccine science more reason to be nervous
