8/2/20 NY, CT, MA tornado and supercell development thread:
The risk area for the day included two slight risk areas in the northeast, each with a 5% tornado risk
I was actually golfing in Rhode Island while the isolated supercell began to develop in extreme eastern NY around mid afternoon so I got a late jump to the chase
At approximately 5:37 PM @EMoriartyWX @ecreightonwx witnessed the first tornado that this storm produced just east of Amenia, NY
Even though the storm had produced a tornado it still remain un-tornado warned for quite some time afterwards
At approximately 6:13 PM the isolated storm was finally tornado warned as I moved in position for an intercept on one of the only east/west roads in the area
At about 6:24 PM I had about located myself right in the path of the storm which was moving unusually slow by New England standards
By about 6:50 PM the storm was almost on top of me. I felt confident moving directly into the path as the rotation didn’t look that strong on radar at the time and it didn’t look all that impressive in person either
Just moments after the previous photo was taken I was actually posting an update to twitter, not thinking anything was going to materialize, when my dad said “that’s starting to look interesting over by the hill”. I looked up and saw rapidly moving left to right clouds
Radar at 6:58 PM, only one minute before the tornado came over the hill
Video of the tornado at 6:59 PM. I cut the footage as the tornado was approaching as it was coming directly towards me and I could hear the tornado and trees being snapped in the woods just hundreds of yards away from me.
After cutting the previous video I repositioned my car behind a metal building for shelter as I assumed that I would be getting hit by the tornado momentarily. The tornado however either lifted or missed me just barely to the west.
It was evident as the next few radar scans came in that the storm had rapidly intensified in strength and rotation literally right as it was moving over top of me, hence producing the tornado out of nowhere
Although the storm was moving unusually slow, I was unable to catch up to it for another hour when it was near Amherst, MA. At this point it was no longer tornado warned although it was still rotating slightly and still had somewhat of a base. However this was it for the storm.
In all the storm produced 4 tornadoes, three of which were rated EF-0 including the one I saw, and one was rated EF-1.
