I don't care whether or not Pelosi is Speaker. Yeah, McCarthy is worse, but it's insane that progressives literally think that Pelosi being Speaker for two more years officially killed this new progressive wave that's been trying to ripple through these last four years.
That woman is 900 years old and will be retiring in two years. We got work to do in the meantime. Forget about Pelosi. We need more people involved at the local and state and federal level that are progressives.
We have progressives living in gerrymandered districts who can't win. We're stuck. We need all boots on the ground to end gerrymandering. We need people to run for the most small, local seats. We need to organize and not run purity tests over the tiniest things.
We can focus on electoral politics and work outside the system. You got DSA chapters raising money to help people pay bills, donating food, and clothes. That's something worth appreciating.
We can't compare what's going on now to the Civil Rights Era because progressives aren't together now. We're more divided than ever because we'd rather listen to podcasters over organizers. We are in a power vacuum and we're vulnerable and are looking for people to lead us.
We have a lot of work to do, guys. I understand the need to go full doomer. I find myself going all full doomer, but I understand this isn't over. We just need to keep going. Keep organizing. Doing every little thing that can bring change.
Minor successes can feel big and important. When I volunteered for Bernie? My area didn't do well when it came to knocking doors and making calls at first, but guess what? We ended up outdoing the rest of South Carolina. That felt great.
So, no. The progressive movement ain't dead yet. It will be if you people keep acting like there's no bigger picture and fall for purity tests. We're not getting the results we want because we're still green. But watch out, in about four years? We might start seeing results.
Do whatever you can. Big or small. Knock doors. Make calls. Open up chapters of grassroots organizations that cater to issues you care about the most: DSA, Sunrise, and so on. It's not easy to build a movement over night when you don't have the Koch Brothers backing you up.
There is nothing wrong with doing something. Anything. If you feel you can make change by attending a protest? Good. You want to work or volunteer for a political campaign? Awesome. You want to run for office? It won't be easy, but I support you. You're doing the damn thing.
