As one or two of you may know, I used to work for Our Price in the UK selling music on vinyl, CD and other formats. I did that for eight and a half years and became Assistant Manager in one of the stores I worked in before taking the leap to studying to become a teacher. (1/8)
I took that leap because of a casual conversation with one of my work colleagues about what I wanted to do with my life in the future. I wanted to 'exercise my brain' and do some sort of study. (2/8)
As an aside, a lot of my friends would say to me that I would make a great teacher. Maybe I had patience, maybe I had empathy or maybe I was great with talking to children. I don't really know why they thought this. (3/8)
After further conversation with my work colleague and some of my ex school mates, I realised I could go to University and study to be a teacher. (4/8)
I knew I had a interest in IT as I did well at Computer Studies at school. I also fitted the criteria for the teacher shortage at the time: Male teachers, ICT teachers, Ethnic Minorities teachers. So it made sense to tick as many boxes as possible. (5/8)
I had no 'Formal Qualifications' that was part of the normal route into University as by the time I made my application, I had been out of education for nearly a decade. So I studied for four years as a 'Mature Student' and qualified as a teacher in 2000. (6/8)
I've now been teaching for a little over 20 years, eight and a half in the UK and about 12 here in Aotearoa. If you allow me to take the people I went to school with out of this equation for just a moment, that results in most of the people I now know. (7/8)
This means the majority of the people I have met, stem from a couple of casual conversations with friends and a colleague...
That's mind blowing! 🤯 (8/8)
