I'm reading @annehelen's "Can't Even" and keep thinking about how the myth of do what you love is layered on top of the myth that if you work hard, you will earn Good Work (prestigious and impact-having or even just sufficiently-compensated in decent working conditions)....1/n
And this plays out across income deciles & occupations: service workers trying to earn the right of set schedules; nonprofit and arts workers trying to earn the right of long term contracts; teachers starting out as substitutes; public servants starting on 90 day contracts...2/n
....articling students, medical residents, adjuncts all trying to work their way up to a living wage, reliable schedule, medium-term job security & shared safety net (health insurance, pension) while feeling like if we don't make it, we aren't working hard or passionately enough.
