Why do I say yes to ad-hocs?
Well, someone has to. ECRs and everybody else want/need their papers published. We as a field have decided that publications are coin of the realm. And until we provide a better/fairer/egalitarian metric we can't bemoan it & let others drown.

How do I decide what to say yes to?
If I'm on the board, I 95% say yes unless totally out of realm. I signed up for the board, it's the right thing to do. I say yes if paper seems *so* cool. I say yes if AE is a friend or someone I admire/fear (not proud of that, but
).

Do I regret saying yes?
Often I do. Current @Dr_Koraly has screwed with future @Dr_Koraly by underestimating the impact of reviewing on time and energy more than once. But, then I think of the authors waiting to hear & I screw my courage to the sticking place.

Should we pay reviewers?
Well, I do the math @450Movement & I'm taken aback at the number. It's work & it's uncompensated & I'm a sap for doing it. But, if we are going to judge ECRs by pubs I don't feel right taking my ball & going home, & letting someone else pay the tab.

And then I turn around & ask others to review?
Yep. All the time. With confidence & desperation & excitement & dread & anticipation & exasperation. The numbers of subs are only going up (still coin of the realm) but the number of willing reviewers are going down.

Is this system sustainable?
No. Not if the trajectory lines between subs and reviewers keep crossing. 15+ requests to get 2-3 yeses is not workable. A sap like me getting so many requests that I now turn down 66.1% (only 41% in 2016) means the well is getting dry.

What can we do?
Dunno.
can't hurt. Better ways of finding reviewers than an Ed board list, google searches, & lab website stalking. Organized efforts to identify, train, support, & compensate new reviewers.

Dunno.

My big concern?
How do we build a new/better/stronger/fairer system without burying the very people we want to help as they are left to try and meet metrics under BOTH the old AND the new system--whatever that may end up being.

Addendum
We are in an unregulated and unenforceable and asymmetrical bartering system. W/ submission I am requesting someone's *waves hands* free labor & in return I will provide someone else *waves hands again* my free labor.

I'm just a gal who can't say no. But, come on, this'll be so cool.
